He's right...LA Confidential is good. But The Usual Suspects is one of the best sort-of dark that make you think movies. =)

Being John Malkovich. Go see it right now.
I don't know how much this one will make you think, but it is dark. You should go see Shadow of the Vampire as soon as you can.

The Last Supper. It's a dark comedy, and I've spent many a happy hour discussing it post-watching with friends. Very, very well-done.

Have you watched "American Psycho"? No, not Psycho, as in like Jack Nicolas hunting people down with his axe/knife/whatever, but this stock broker killing everyone he is jealous of?
The ending is pretty surprising, and from what I heard it almost didn't make it to Australia (during the screening here) from the extreme violence which wasn't the theme of the story anyway. ;)

Memento, Falling Down, American History X, Dark City, Resivour Dogs, uh... Shawshank Redemption, uh...hmm... that'll keep you busy for a while (I STRONGLY RECOMMEND ALL OF THESE)
Mulholland Drive (or any David Lynch movie), Donnie Darko, Requiem for a Dream, Pi, Memento, Brazil, 12 Monkeys, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Blade Runner, Kafka, Fight Club, In the Mouth of Madness, A Clockwork Orange, etc.

Dark City, Crash, City of Lost Children, The End of Violence, Jacob's Ladder, Dead Man, Videodrome, Strange Days, Seven (Se7en), Frailty (in theaters now), Naked Lunch, The Game, The Butcher Boy, Delicatessen (almost impossible to find), Until the End of the World (again, hard to find).
I may as well list some of the other David Lynch movies, too:
Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, Lost Highway, Blue Velvet.
Yes, I realize that I listed several that were already mentioned by other people, but they are good enough for double mentions.
