I've been meaning to write an article on how to maximize contribution to open source projects, but it looks like Geoff Broadwell beat me. But probably better than I would have. And I'm not complaining.
Opimizing is fun. Lots of fun. However, it's something which you should never set to be your primary goal. I'm a firm believer in what Knuth once said: "Premature optimization is the root of all evil."

I think you missed the point... Or is that sarcasm?
(Optimization doesn't always refer to execution speed or memory usage. It can be business value or development velocity or whatever else.)

I'd almost think I'd died and gone to heaven, except this will probably be the exception, not the rule.
