The Quest for a Desk
I'm finally moved into my new apartment. There are still some things to be unpacked, but they're going to eventually find their home on their own. Since this apartment isn't furnished like a dorm room or even university apartments are, I've had to scrounge up a few things (with the greatly appreciated help of my parents) to even live. But, most of you probably know that the centerpiece of my apartment is, of course, my computers. And, especially since I have repetitive stress injuries, a good desk is important. In fact, the desk must be perfect. So I went shopping. And shopping. And shopping. And I learned something. There are two types of desks in the world: expensive ones, which made of nice wood but have tons of stupid frilly things like CD cases and tower cases and weird walls and hutches that get in the way more than anything; and inexpensive ones, which have the right design (simple, no-nonsense) but are made of eighth inch pine and couldn't stand during a stiff breeze, let alone holding two CRTs, one of which is 21 inches. :P
I had some criteria. The desk must be strong. (This rules out about half.) It must be at least somewhat large. (Here's another half of those remaining.) It must have ample breathing and access room for the computers. (Those little CPU cabinets? Can you say idling at 55 Celsius? I don't even want to think about how tough it would be to mess with cables...) It must be the right height for typing. I measured the natural typing position of my hands while sitting at the max height of my chair and realized I needed a test about 29 inches high or lower. The problem is, nobody actually makes desks like that. As a compromise, I figured 29.5 inches would be okay... Some desks had keyboard trays that were the proper height for typing and mousing, but some were so small they wouldn't have been able to hold my *keyboard*, let alone my mouse pad. It's pathetic. Why do all desks suck??? So I have turned to my last resort: building one. I'm planning on going home on a weekend, buying some lumber, and building a simple desk / table that matches my specifications. For now I'm borrowing my parents' old dining room table, which actually turns out to be almost the perfect height, shape, and sturdiness. It would be nice if it was about half an inch lower, but it's much better than that crap Staples, OfficeMax, and Office Depot carry.
It just blows my mind. All I wanted was a simple place to put my computer.
I have the -exact- same problem. I have seen ergo-centric desks that look like they would be perfect however they cost infinitely more than any budget you or I have can afford.
I've been having the exact same problem. Right now I have my monitor on top of a stack of storage bins and keep the keyboard/mouse on my thighs. Hell, I wouldn't even might a not-so-strong one, as long as it doesn't look like ass and doesn't wobble.
One of the only desks at Office Max Chad liked was [HTML_REMOVED] this desk[HTML_REMOVED] which is coincidentally the same desk that I got for my apartment. He just didn't think that the left piece was worth getting (neither did I) and he wasn't sure the monitor shelf would be sturdy enough for his two monitors. Anyway, good luck finding a desk!
Apparently that link is no longer valid.
Wha, the idea about building your own desk sounds cool :) Yeah it annoys when simple things take so much time. This is the 21st century for ya... Anyway, good luck with further "desk adventures", cabinetmaker :D
Kind of weird, but the best desk I ever had is my current one: A folding banquet table.
They are the perfect height for me. I have one at work and one at home. They are spacious, open, cheap to replace if you need to (although I've never needed to). And they're strong enough, too... Each one is supporting two heavy monitors, stacks of books, telephone and desk lamp at work, etc...
Also weird: I am very comfortable in a standard folding metal chair, at my banquet table desks.
At work I have an Aeron though :)
Aerons are nice chairs, but seriously, if I didn't have this chair, I would prefer a folding metal chair. We have a lot of different "office chairs" here at work, and I've used other "office chairs" elsewhere, and I hate them.
What matters most is that my butt is the proper height above the floor, and my hands are the proper height as well...
I'm 6'2.5", so if anyone else is about this height, you can try my recommendation :)
It did take a little trial and error, to make sure the table is the right height. "Standard" folding metal chairs are pretty much all the same though.
sorry about that, apparently linking to Officemax.com doesn't work
Feel your pain, bro. I've had to use Pete's folding table for a "desk" up to this point. Fortunately, I've got some space on my Best Buy card, so I just ordered a desk there, and I'm probably gonna go pick it up soon - I had a choice of either paying an extra $30 to have it shipped to my place or pick it up in Des Moines. This way I can save cash and I now have an excuse to check out Jordan Creek, the new mall in West Des Moines... ^_^
